(Jan, 2010)
I read some Elvis trivia today that said — had he survived — Elvis would have turned 75 today. I had to chuckle. Although I’m not a particularly rabid Elvis fan, I recall girls my age in school swooning and twitting about like hens at the mention of his name, and his cool, slicked-back duck-tail haircuts, the same ones Dad would never let me wear. For the most part, we boys were just plain jealous. I do believe, however, Elvis changed the course of music forever. A few others have done that, too — Bob Dylan, The Beatles, to mention a couple — but aside from the classicists, few of them, living or dead, have turned 75 with as much hoopla.
I got curious about how many songs The King of Rock & Roll had actually recorded, so I did a Google search and discovered a site that indicates the number of songs hovers somewhere around 800. That’s a lot of songs. While pouring through the Elvis song title title list, I began playing a little word game that escalated into more than an hour of fun…
KISS ME QUICK in the LITTLE CABIN ON THE HILL because I am a LONELY MAN and even though I’M NOT THE MARRYING KIND, / I’LL NEVER KNOW / IF YOU TALK IN YOUR SLEEP. / I REALLY DON’T WANT TO KNOW. / But I WONDER, I WONDER, I WONDER / IF I’M A FOOL. Sometimes I think I’LL REMEMBER YOU, but IF WE NEVER MEET AGAIN at least I WAS THE ONE to realize ONLY THE STRONG SURVIVE. Oh, well — EASY COME, EASY GO. I think I FORGOT TO REMEMBER TO FORGET you, anyhow.
Man, oh, man, 800 songs is really a lot of songs!
STARTING TODAY / JUST BECAUSE / IT’S A MATTER OF TIME, / IF I WERE YOU I’d LET YOURSELF GO and PUT THE BLAME ON ME. / SLOWLY BUT SURELY / SOMEBODY BIGGER THAN YOU AND I will MAKE BELIEVE our FADED LOVE has been NOTHINGVILLE, a FAIRYTALE. / SOFTLY, AS I LEAVE YOU / I JUST CAN’T HELP BELIEVIN’ / IT’S IMPOSSIBLE for you to TELL ME WHY / THE LAST FAREWELL is WHAT EVERY WOMAN LIVES FOR. THERE’S GOLD IN THE MOUNTAINS and now I know its true: I’M BEGINNING TO FORGET YOU. / I’M MOVIN’ ON / BEYOND THE BEND/ JUST BECAUSE / A BOY LIKE ME, A GIRL LIKE YOU will always FLIP, FLOP AND FLY like A PUPPET ON A STRING. Then again, I DON’T WANT TO / RUNAWAY / UNTIL IT’S TIME FOR YOU TO GO, / TROUBLE is, THINKING ABOUT YOU confirms that ONCE IS ENOUGH. IT AIN’T NO BIG THING, but IT’S OVER. / I’M LEAVIN’ on the NUMBER EIGHT train tonight at 8PM for some FUN IN ACAPULCO.
Tim says: Hats off to you, Elvis! Isn’t it FUNNY HOW TIME SLIPS AWAY.
