FRIDAY FOOD THING
The way I look at it, if you aren’t constantly experimenting in the kitchen you’re just following directions — and you know what? My life is already complicated by way too many instructions. There’s not a recipe I use, or a meal I prepare, or a dish I create where I don’t experiment in one way or another. To me, life is too darn short to eat the same food prepared the same way time after time; that’s like reading the same book, listening to the same song, wearing the same clothes, watching the same movie over and over again.
With that said, last night I baked a couple of chicken breasts. A dash of this, a dash of that, some lemon pepper mixed with a pinch of red Cayenne, you name it. Even so, something was still missing. And then — bingo! I discovered some pepperoni hiding way back in the rear of my refrigerator just waiting for that very moment in time and space, and like that mysterious Alice in Wonderland potion, it had “TRY ME!” written all over it. I made a small incision in the skin of each chicken breast, into which I surgically inserted several pepperoni implants.
The pepperoni-stuffed chicken parts were outstanding.
Next time I’m going to try enlivening my chicken’s skin with strawberry jam. Or peanut butter. Or a dollop of mayonnaise. Maybe even a sliver of apple. Or a pinch of cinnamon. Or a splash of molasses. Or — just because life is too darn short for reruns — maybe even a sardine or two.
